Miu Miu Defies the Recession and Opens its Third N.Y Store
The opening of Miu Miu's third store in New York is a testament to the brand's ongoing growth. Located on 57th Street, the building was designed by Roberto Baciocchi, who was the mastermind behind several of Miu Miu's stores. Inside, the store contains Miu Miu's full range of apparel, accessories and eyewear, and are all spread out amongst the differently sized rooms, throughout the store. The new location is part of Miu Miu's development strategy, which involves ten store openings for the second half of the year. The plan has remained in place despite the recession.

Brooklyn Industries Pop up
Rag & Bone Open First Flagship
With its old english meets American preppy designs, designers Marcus Wainwright and David Neville just opened their first retail flagship on Christopher Street, in New York's West Village. Housed in a former cafe, the shop's decor is a mix of big city industrial and quaint antique-y touches. The space has a tin ceiling, exposed pipes, steel frame mirrors, and is filled with persian rugs, barcelona chairs, and vintage suitcases.
They offer a full mens, womens, and newly launched children's collection.
Comme Des Garcons for H & M
The famously avant-garde Japanese label, spearheaded by design powerhouse Rei Kawakubo, will provide a range of both men's and womenswear, as well as childrenswear, accessories and a new unisex fragrance for the retailer. In honour of its Japanese roots, the collaborative line will launch exclusively at H&M in Tokyo in November before being rolled out worldwide a few days later.

And the dress choice was...
Most Americans may be marveling at the momentous election of their first black president, but the country's fashionistas have something equally as important on their minds: Michelle Obama's choice of outfit on election night.
Mrs Obama wore a red and black scoop-neck dress by Narciso Rodriguez for the historic moment, a decision that has sparked instant debate among the fashion-focused. Some branded it an eyesore, others said it was a simple mistake. However, though many have labeled our next first lady’s outfit as an odd choice, I feel that Michelle’s dress characterized her unique sense of style, and ability to be herself.
The fashion director, Julie Gilhart, of Barneys New York commented on Michelle Obama's dress earlier this week, she wrote, "the dress was unpretentious, it said, be who you are, and don't let someone else tell you how to be."
Quote of the Week
I found this quote in the November issue of Nylon Magazine, and really like it. The quote sums up the way I feel about New York City.
"New York is a place where I finally feel at home. Driving over the Brooklyn Bridge at night in a yellow cab and gazing out over the tops of skyscrapers, their peaks reaching ever upward, lights twinkling out of the endless windows like fire flies, their glow reflected in the water of the Hudson River, there is no place I'd rather be."..I have found my home.
The Village Pet Store
Once located at 89 7th Avenue, between West 4th and Bleeker, in the West Village, was Banksy's newest project...a tiny pet store. Remaining highly dissimilar from his regular work of graffiti street art, Banksy put together a pet store made up of animals made out of McDonald's Chicken Mcnuggets, fish made from bread, and hot dogs. The exhibit is strange and enticing all at the same time.
Here are some images of Banksy's Pet Store...

The Opening of Tiffany & Co.'s Ginza Flagship
Tiffany & Co. unveiled its newly revamped Ginza, Tokyo flagship this past Saturday. The opening of this striking and opulent, 11,988-square-foot flagship demonstrates how luxury brands are continuing to remain uneffected by the global recession. The building was designed by architect, Kengo Juma, who also put together LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton's One Omotesando building. Creating a striking facade for Tiffany, with angular glass panels reminiscent of a diamond's facets, WWD's Amanda Kaiser describes the flaship as having "a sophisticated yet earthy feel. Featuring gray stone floors, silk-coated aluminum wallpaper, and a dramatic 25-foot high illuminated wall of crystal stone, which adorns the store’s entrance area, the newly revamped store emanates luxury." In other words, the global recession may exist, but not within the world of luxury brands.

My Favorite "Fashion Film"
One of my favorite avant-garde films, L'annee derniere a Marienbad (Last Year at Marienbad), is in my opinion one of the greatest costume films of the 20th century.
The film itself is famous for its ambiguous narrative structure, in which truth and fiction are difficult to distinguish, and the exact temporal and spatial relationship of the events throughout the film are open to question. The dream-like nature of the film has fascinated and baffled audiences and critics, some hailing it as a masterpiece, others finding it incomprehensible. Aside from the narrative, the costumes in the film, worn by the female protagonist, are definitely worth noting. The costumes not only help to distinguish the various scene juxtapositions, but also fascinate and enthrall the viewer into the film's dreamlike state. This film has been noted to have inspired many contemporary designers, one of which being Karl Lagerfeld.
